"Scientific Lectures Series for High Schools" is the event Guangdong Technion - Israel Institute of Technology (GTIIT) held to promote scientific knowledge and stimulate students' enthusiasm for research and exploration.

Recently, the lecture was held at Shantou Jinshan Middle School. Prof. Kong Bo from GTIIT Chemical Engineering Program gave students a science lecture titled "Accelerating Technological Innovation of Process Industry through Large-scale Multiphase Flow Simulation Technology" and received enthusiastic responses.

"In many industrial processes, such as the chemical, pharmaceutical, energy, and food industries, flows and reactions in reactors often involve multiphase flows." With the increasing availability and affordability of computing resources, conducting numerical simulations to test, optimize and scale up different reactor designs is becoming an alternative to the expensive factory physical tests, said Prof. Kong. However, unlike the single-phase CFD in aerospace and automotive industries, the CFD simulation of multiphase flow has not been widely paid attention to or frequently used in process engineering practice.

Without boring formulas or obscure terms, Prof. Kong demonstrated the multiphase flow in nature and engineering applications, as well as the relationship between multiphase flow systems and process engineering through vivid illustrations and examples in life. He further took three examples to introduce the use of multiphase CFD in solving practical engineering cases.

The science lecture aroused students' curiosity for knowledge. They listened carefully and interacted with Prof. Kong actively, asking questions about "present technological issues" and "the importance of computers in scientific research". Prof. Kong answered their questions with his research experience, and made full communication with the students.

After the lecture, students came to the stage again to ask questions, appreciating the opportunity to have face-to-face communications with the professor. Surrounded by eager students, Prof. Kong encouraged them to explore their areas of interest. "For example, if you like coffee, you can study what temperature is best for extraction; if you enjoy cooking, you can experiment on the best degree of heating to make delicious dishes. Science is closely related to daily life."
